Over 25 percent of the population of the United States today were not yet born on September 11, 2001, and millions more who were too young to have any remembrance of one of the darkest days in America’s history. For the past two decades, on that same day, September 11th, thousands of motorcyclists embark on a “rolling memorial” ride through 42 miles and 14 municipalities of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Given the size and importance of this event, safety is of great importance, recognized by the escort of Lycoming County Sheriff Mark Lusk and supported by fire police at intersections throughout the ride.

The loss from that day was some 3000 lives resulting from terrorists that hijacked four commercial airplanes and their subsequent crashes. Besides the loss of the passengers in the planes there were also those in the buildings where the crashes took place. A total of 343 firefighters, and 71 law enforcement officers lost their lives in New York City as a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. These brave first responders selflessly rushed into the towers to save lives, demonstrating immense courage and heroism in the face of tragedy. The Pentagon was likewise targeted resulting in the loss of 184 lives, including both civilian and military personnel.

New 911-Coalition Committee Board Member board member and PA State Representative Joe Hamm states, “It is important that we remember and honor the victims, first responders, and military men and women who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Holding this local memorial ride every year will ensure our brave heroes will never be forgotten.”

The importance of the 9/11 Memorial Ride is to honor those who lost their lives, but also to remind our country that we can never take our liberty and freedom for granted. The roar of thousands of motorcycles is a symbol of strength. It was inspired by Todd Beamer’s last words to the other passengers who made the decision to do all they could to prevent their hijacked plane from crashing into the White House or Capitol Building that it was headed for. The last words heard that day on United Flight 93 was, ”Are you guys ready? Okay. Let’s roll.”

Since 2009, September 11th is officially named Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, motorcycle riders from around the country are invited to show their patriotism by being a part of this great event. The assembly area is at the Clinton Township Volunteer Company, 2311-Rt 54, Montgomery, PA. As always the spectators along the route also are encouraged and have played a major factor in this memorial ride. Food and other vendors will be on the grounds. Gates will open at 10:00 am and kickstands up at 6:00 pm. A blessing of the bikes will be available throughout the day.
